Bad North: Jotunn Edition

Bad North: Jotunn Edition is a charming but brutal real-time tactics roguelite in which players control squads to protect beautiful islands from Viking hordes that never stop coming. Plausible Concept made it and Raw Fury published it. Its simple design gives it a lot of strategic depth in short, replayable sessions. The game is great for PC gamers who want perfect accuracy or Android users who want to play it on their phones using Winlator. It combines procedural generation with permadeath tension to make addictive chains of tactical wins and losses.

Epic Saga of the Northern Exodus

The story forces players to flee north in a hurry, taking civilians out of a peaceful kingdom that has been taken over by shadowy Viking invaders who come in longships. The story unfolds naturally through rising waves and a foggy map. Each island that is defended shows more of the archipelago and the doom that is coming. Success means moving forward and changing the squad, but failure means losing everything, which makes every run feel like a race against time and a sacrifice.

The Jotunn Edition adds to this story by adding more lore, jotunn-inspired enemies, new commanders, and trait unlocks that hint at old threats and heroic lineages. Modifier campaigns and other side elements add story to the game, turning normal defenses into epic tales of adaptation and resilience, where player choices shape the kingdom’s fading legacy in the midst of procedural chaos.

Tactical Depth in Real-Time Island Battles

The main part of the game is pausing the action to move squads—archers for ranged fire, pikemen for thrusts against infantry, shieldbearers for holding the front line, and bombers for crowd control—across different types of terrain. Enemies always land by boat, so you need to use rock-paper-scissors to stop them: raise archers on hills, funnel enemies into pike walls, or shield-rush them as they get off the boat. Coins from preserved houses pay for upgrades, which give squads new abilities like rapid fire or evasion. This rewards players who manage their money well.

The roguelite structure really shines in campaign mode, where you can chain together 10 to 20 islands with endless variations and add challenge modifiers like night fog or hound packs to make the game more fun to play again. The controls are easy to use, and you can drag and drop things and quickly retreat. They work well with both keyboard and touch input. This purity encourages mastery, where one wrong move can lead to wipeouts, balancing accessibility with punishing strategy.

My Gripping Command Through Viking Storms

I was hooked on Bad North right away. Each 15–30 minute run was full of tension, from nail-biting last-second moves to euphoric wave clears set to swelling ambient tracks. The simple graphics were beautiful in a procedural way, and the permadeath made the game more adaptive, turning “one more try” into hours lost. The portable tactical rush was so much fun that it made people want to play it again and again, whether on powerful PCs or Android through Winlator.
