Storyline

In the winter of 2012, Yakuza 5 takes place in five connected parts, each focusing on a different main character as the Tojo Clan and Omi Alliance prepare for war. Kazuma Kiryu works as a taxi driver in Fukuoka, where he hides his past from his adopted daughter Haruka, who wants to be an idol. Taiga Saejima is harassed in Abashiri Prison before escaping into the snowy wilderness of Hokkaido, where he hunts for clues about a fake death. Shun Akiyama grows his loan business in Osaka’s Sotenbori, helping Haruka’s Princess League grow despite threats from the shadows. Tatsuo Shinada, a disgraced baseball player from Nagoya, looks into the match-fixing scandal that is linked to a purge of the yakuza in the area. Haruka deals with the dangers of fame while balancing school and performances.

The disappearance of Tojo Chairman Daigo Dojima makes things worse, leading to assassinations and alliances. Kiryu faces betrayals from the Yamagasa family; Saejima fights assassins and finds double-crosses; Akiyama finds out about entertainment conspiracies involving Haruka’s enemies; and Shinada finds out about ties between corporations and the yakuza. In Tokyo’s Kamurocho, paths cross for the final defense of Haruka’s Japan Dome concert against a money-hungry mastermind who is getting rid of old-school yakuza. Revelations about family, legacy, and the past that can’t be changed come together to create unlikely bonds in a symphony of honor and revenge.

Gameplay

Yakuza 5’s main draw is its smooth beat ’em up combat in five huge areas: Fukuoka’s neon streets, Sapporo’s icy alleys, Osaka’s canals, Nagoya’s arcades, and Kamurocho’s chaos. Change the main characters’ styles to fit their roles: Kiryu’s balanced Dragon strikes, Saejima’s grapples, Akiyama’s quick kicks, and Shinada’s tackle barrages. Build Heat for cinematic Heat Actions, Climax finishers, and Revelation power-ups while fighting ragdoll enemies. Weapons get better at swinging to kill; exploring without stopping gives you side stories and changing encounters.
